Weekly Update for December 4th
This week we worked with the letter “Nn”. We drew a nurse, we sounded out words that had the letter “Nn” in them, and we wrote the letter “Nn” on handwriting lines. Next week we will work with the letter “Oo”. In writing, we continued working on books. This week we worked on lift the flap books. We celebrated on Friday because everyone had finished at least one book. Your child was the star of the Wallace Show as they read their book to the class! In math, we continued making patterns. We continued to work on where the pattern started over. On Monday, we will start a new unit of measurement. In social studies, we talked about nursery rhymes. We read through the nursery rhymes, talked about rhyming words, and did activities for several of them. Next week we will talk about needs and wants as well as the holidays – Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Christmas. I am sending home a Christmas tree today. Please decorate the tree as a family and send it back whenever you are done. We will hang them outside our classroom.

Weekly Update for November 20th
This week we worked with the letter “Mm”. We drew a monkey, we sounded out words that had the letter “Mm” in them, and we wrote the letter “Mm” on handwriting lines. Next week we will not be working on a letter due to the shortened week. In writing, we continued working on books. This week we worked on counting books and color books. In math, we continued making patterns. We discussed where the pattern started over. This was a little tough for the kids. You may have seen the break the train papers come home. We will continue to work on breaking a pattern into cars, or units, until we have mastered it. In social studies, we talked about Pilgrims. We made a book about the pilgrims, we made a trunk and packed it with pilgrim belongings, we made pilgrim hats, and we made butter from cream just like the pilgrims would have done. Next week we will talk about Thanksgiving. I will not do a newsletter next week due to the holiday. I hope you have an excellent Thanksgiving!

This week we worked with the letter “Ll”. We drew a lion, we sounded out words that had the letter “Ll” in them, and we wrote the letter “Ll” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Mm”. In writing, we continued working on books. This week we worked on our abc books and started writing counting books. In math, we continued making patterns. We made 1,2 patterns, arrow patterns, and played games called “What comes next?” and Add On. In social studies, we talked about Native Americans. We made tepees, necklaces, and buffalo hide paintings. We also played some games that Indian children would play. Next week we will talk about the pilgrims. If your family participated in the fall PTO fundraiser, you can pick up your items on Thursday, November 19th from 4pm – 7pm.

Weekly Update for November 6th
This week we worked with the letter “Kk”. We made kites, we sounded out words that had the letter “Kk” in them, and we wrote the letter “Kk” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Ll”. In writing, we continued working on books. We got our writing folders this week to start putting our books in and we learned about another type of book we can write – an abc book. In math, we continued making patterns. This week we made patterns with cubes, pattern blocks, counters, and tiles. Today we made patterned snakes. In science, we talked about pumpkins. We did an activity about the life cycle of pumpkin. We made a book to help remind us of the life cycle. We drew a jack-o-lantern and wrote about it. Next week we will talk about Native Americans. We have been asked by our school’s social worker to participate in a food drive for Thanksgiving. Kindergarten students have been asked to bring canned foods. The class who brings the most cans wins a pizza party. The food drive starts on Monday, the 9th and goes through Friday, the 13th. Let’s help make some families in our community have an excellent Thanksgiving!!!! If you send cans to school with your child, please have your child bring the cans down to our classroom to be counted.

Weekly Update for October 29th
This week we worked with the letter “Jj”. We made jellyfish, we sounded out words that had the letter “Jj” in them, and we wrote the letter “Jj” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Kk”. In writing, we began writing our first book. We have made the cover and the first page in the story. In math, we started making patterns. In science, we talked about apples. We did an activity about the life cycle of an apple. We wrote about what products come from apples and we ended the week with a taste test of apple products. The kids graphed their favorite type of apples. Next week we will talk about pumpkins. Today I am sending home the November Book-It list. Just read 10 books, write them down on the form, and return to school with your child for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. I am also sending home the November book order. You can order online or through me. I attached directions for either method to the book order if you wish to order.

Weekly Update for October 23rd
This week we worked with the letter “Ii”. We made pictures of things that would hide in the grass, we sounded out words that had the letter “Ii” in them, and we wrote the letter “Ii” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Jj”. In writing, we wrote in our writing notebooks and created a rubric together of what we thought good writing looked like in our classroom. In math, we practiced writing the numbers 1 – 10 and putting names in order from shortest to longest. We will start next week learning about patterns. In social studies, we looked at maps. The kids saw and made maps of our classroom, the earth, and the United States. Next week we will do our theme on apples. Usually, I end this theme with a taste test. Please be looking for a note about sending in apple products with your child. Parent/Teacher conferences are next week. If you did not receive your confirmation note regarding your conference please contact me as soon as possible. I look forward to getting a chance to talk with you.

Weekly Update for October 16th
This week we worked with the letter “Hh”. We made hand hats, we sounded out words that had the letter “Hh” in them, and we wrote the letter “Hh” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Ii”. In writing, we started making sure that there were both words and pictures in our stories and we also stretched out a word and wrote down what we heard. I was able to read every one of your children’s writing. In math, we have started ordering objects from smallest to largest. We’ve ordered cubes, names, and today numbers. We talked about fire safety this week. The fire department came out and did a presentation for us. We even got to crawl through their truck. It was very exciting. I’m sure you all heard about it. Next week we will talk about maps. Ms. Bridges’ last day was Thursday. She did an excellent job with each of your children. Don’t forget that the chili supper is tonight at school from 6 to 8. There will be food, games, and a silent auction for our decorated pumpkin. Come out for some Willard South fun!

This week we worked with the letter “Gg”. We finger painted gumballs, we sounded out words that had the letter “Gg” in them, and we wrote the letter “Gg” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Hh”. In writing, we used the name chart to help us write words. In math, we have started comparing objects. We learned a new game called Compare, which is the game we know as “war”. We talked about community helpers this week. Next week we will talk about fire safety. The fire department will be coming to kindergarten on Thursday to share with us some fire safety tips! Ms. Bridges’ last day will be Thursday as well. She has done an incredible job in our classroom and we will miss her!

This week we worked with the letter “Ff”. We made our foot prints, we sounded out words that had the letter “Ff” in them, and we wrote the letter “Ff” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Gg”. In writing, we made sure our stories had a setting. We also worked on adding lots of details to our pictures. In math, we took inventory and recorded what we found. We also started measuring this week. We talked about fairy tales this week. Next week we will talk about community helpers. We have a few special guests coming to talk to our class! I am sending home a book order today along with instructions for ordering online. Book orders will be due on Friday, October 16th.

This week we worked with the letter “Ee”. We wrote and drew pictures about an animal that hatches out of an egg, we sounded out words that had the letter “Ee” in them, and we wrote the letter “Ee” on handwriting lines. Next week we will be working with the letter “Ff”. In writing, we made an anchor chart with ideas to write about. The children can refer to this chart if they have trouble getting started. We also looked at a picture and drew a story about it. In math, we learned another new game called Build It. The kids draw a card and use counters to match the number on the card. In science, we talked about living and nonliving things. Next week we will talk about fairy tales.
